Local history collection, 1894-1982.

Collection primarily consists of a subject file of clippings, letters, pamphlets, maps, typescript articles, newsletters, brochures, and other printed items relating to the history of Port Jervis. Subjects include Stephen Crane, the Delaware and Hudson Canal, the Town of Deerpark, Battle of Minisink, industry, churches, fire department, floods, railroads, and Indians. Collection also includes a report from the Office of Civil Defense, Port Jervis, concerning emergency efforts during the flood of 1955; and two papers by John McAndrew on the colonial boundary dispute between the Province of New York and the Province of New Jersey, 1967-1970.

Crane, Stephen, 1871-1900

Stephen Crane was a novelist, poet, and journalst. He was born November 1, 1871, at 14 Mulberry Place, Newark, New Jersey. Crane is best known for his novel The Red Badge of Courage (1895) that depicted the experiences of a soldier in the Civil War. During the Spanish-American War (1898), Crame served as a correspondent.
